How does Emily create each individual porcelain from scratch? See a few tricks of the trade:


Each cake base is scaled down to match the proportions of the original cake.



As you can see here, every flower is hand-built petal by petal and attached to the cake with liquid clay.

After being fired in the kiln once, it is now in bique stage and ready to be painted.
 

After the base is made, I begin to decorate each cake with liquid clay to replicate the texture of the icing. The ribbons you see in the above photo are folded clay.

 

 

As you can see in the background of this photo, the paintbrushes I use are tiny, and this is often the most time-consuming process. The cake is fired again after painting to a lower heat to set the paint.
